There’s a new volunteer at the helm for the Chatham Terry Fox Run.
Tara Pettipiece participated in the run a few times in the past. When she saw an article looking for an organizer, she jumped at the chance.
“It’s a great way to give back to the community,” said Pettipiece.
She’s never organized community events before, but has a background in organizing sporting tournaments.
“It’s a long-standing organization,” said Pettipiece. “I just wanted to give back.”
The event includes 1-kilometre, 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre events. Pettipiece says it is non-competitive and family-friendly.
Terry Fox runs are held in more than 9,000 communities across Canada, raising money for cancer research. They always take place the second Sunday in September after Labour Day. The first run was held September 1981. More than 300,000 people walked or ran or cycled and raised $3.5 million.
The Chatham event is September 16 and registration begins at 9 a.m.
Registration can be done ahead of time online or on site the day of the race. This year's event will take place from the Field House Patio on Courthouse Lane by Chatham's mini soccer fields and the Children’s Treatment Centre.
