Running For A Cancer Cure

Chatham-Kent will join a national movement to beat cancer next month by holding its first-ever Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure.

Run co-director Joan Byng says it's taking place on September 30 at the corner of Bloomfield Rd. and Riverview Dr. in Chatham.

"The route provides a great countryside view for people, it's a great run," says Byng. "There's not a lot of traffic that we're impeding either and we've got a great facility that we're using... the Union Gas Information Technology Centre."

The event will have some special recognition for survivors, too. Rebecca Johnston, who's helping to organize the run-day experience, says it'll be a great family event.

"To have this run come to Chatham-Kent and see the community rally around it, I think will be very impactful for all of the survivors and supporters," says Johnston. "The survivors will be treated like royalty, there's a survivors tent, there will be a place to relax, there'll be snacks -- they'll feel pretty special."

Johnston says there will be music, a fun warm-up routine, and some face painting and nail painting.

Registrations are a bit slow coming in so far, though, so organizers are urging people to sign up.

You can register to take part in the run online at the CIBC Run for the Cure website by clicking here or in-person at the local Canadian Cancer Society office.

This year, it's estimated that 80-thousand Canadians will come together for the 27th annual event.
