CKHA To Hold Mock Gun Drill

There will be a big police presence at the Chatham hospital Tuesday night.

But don't worry, it's only a training exercise.

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is practicing its Code Silver procedures from 5pm to 7pm on June 5. After that, additional training exercises will continue until 9pm.

Visitors will not be able to enter or exit the building through entrances/exits in Zone A during the training exercise. That restriction includes the Ambulatory Care entrance facing Louise St. As an alternative, visitors are asked to use the CKHA’s main entrance facing Grand Ave.

The scenario the hospital is preparing for is a man with a gun on the loose inside the hospital.

The exercise comes just a couple of weeks after the hospital had to deal with a gun call May 24 after reports of a man with a weapon sitting outside the hospital in Chatham. No weapon was found but a 48-year-old Wallaceburg man was taken to hospital for an assessment.

Additional mock emergency events are planned for the Chatham and Wallaceburg sites later in the year.
