Window A/C Units Cause Fires

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services were busy Tuesday night, responding to two fires caused by window air conditioners.

In Bothwell, firefighters were called to a home on Oak St. just after 11:30pm.

Crews were able to stop the blaze from spreading, however, some cars, a boat, and some neighbouring structures all suffered fire-related damage. The total damage estimate is $120,000.

An elderly resident was able to get out safely but was taken to hospital as a precaution for treatment of smoke inhalation.

In Harwich, firefighters were called to a home on Maynard Line just after 10:30pm.

Crews were able to extinguish a fire there in the wall and attic on the second floor. Officials say the blaze was caused by a window a/c unit that was plugged into old knob and tube wiring.

There has been no word on injuries, but damage is pegged at $20,000.
