A Chatham woman says she has no choice but to sell her property after failing to get its heritage designation removed.
Chatham-Kent council voted 8-7 Monday night to receive an information report, which indicated that the heritage designation of 90 Park St. in Chatham will remain in effect.
Now that a final decision has been made, Helen Campbell has one piece of advice to Chatham-Kent residents thinking about applying for a similar designation:
"It's a crazy thing to do, don't ever do it."
Campbell says she has been trying to free herself from her property's heritage designation for the past three and a half years and hasn't had any luck.
"I think [Chatham-Kent council] made a bad decision," she says. "The agenda was all mixed up -- 3/4 of the [councillors] were mixed up on how they should vote because of the agenda that was set before them. I was right there and I was willing to help, according to what has led up to this situation, but they wouldn't let me talk."
Campbell says now that her fight is over, the next step is to try to sell her home.
"Because it's a heritage house, it's a special house for somebody that doesn't mind old things," says Campbell. "It's very limited so I don't expect everybody's going to jump in at once... but I will try my best to sell."
