Chatham-Kent OPP nabbed three drivers on Hwy. 401 for racing and stunt driving last week.
Police say on Friday at around 11:30am, a member of Chatham-Kent OPP noticed a vehicle speeding on westbound Hwy. 401 near Scane Rd. The officers' RADAR device measured a speed over 160 km/hr. The posted speed limit on the highway is 100 km/hr.
A 23-year-old man from Mississauga was charged with racing a motor vehicle. He will appear in Ontario Court of Justice on June 6.
The man's drivers licence has been suspended and the vehicle will be impounded for a period of seven days.
Later that day at around 5pm, another driver was caught speeding on the same road. Police say a member of Chatham-Kent OPP's RADAR device tracked a westbound motor-vehicle going over 160 km/hr.
A 20-year-old man from Montreal was charged with racing a motor vehicle. He will appear in Ontario Court of Justice on April 25.
Then on Sunday at around 7am, a member of Chatham-Kent OPP was using a RADAR device on Hwy. 401 WB near Queens Line when they noticed a motor-vehicle going over the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr. Police say the vehicle registered a speed of over 170 km/hr.
A 50-year-old man from Nashville, Tennessee was charged with racing a motor vehicle.
He will appear in Ontario Court of Justice on May 16.
Chatham-Kent OPP would like to remind drivers that stunt driving and racing are the most serious and reckless forms of aggressive driving.
The penalties for driving 50 km/hr or more over the speed limit include:
- Immediate seven-day licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment
- Upon conviction, $2,000 to $10,000 fine, six demerit points, up to six months in jail, up to two years licence suspension for a first conviction
- Driver's licence suspension of up to ten years for a second conviction within ten years.
