Some volunteers at Chatham Hope Haven are a little on edge following a couple of fights at the shelter.
Wanda Bell, a public relations volunteer, says some of the men who were helping run the men's shelter have quit over fears of opening the door to the wrong person.
Bell says there have been cases of fights, which goes against the shelter's rules. Those who don't follow the guidelines that have been set out are asked to leave.
"There have been a few people banned from the haven," says Bell. "That was the fear, it involved letting someone in that's not allowed back in."
In order to help current and future volunteers feel safe, the men's shelter is looking to install a surveillance system so volunteers can see and speak to people without having to open the front door. However, that type of equipment doesn't come cheap.
Bell says a proper security system will cost about $3,000, which is in addition to their operating costs. To reach their target, the haven is fundraising through community events and donations.
"I think we're halfway there right now, we've had some really great contributors... but we just need a little more," she says.
The men's shelter has been running for 120 days and despite some bumps in the road, Bell says operations have mostly been running smoothly.
However, they are looking for more help. In order to attract volunteers, Bell says they've shortened the shifts. Anyone who is interested in helping out is encouraged to contact Hope Haven through their website.
