The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) has issued a flood watch for Chatham-Kent due to strong winds in the forecast.
According to the conservation authority, winds are expected to peak late Saturday afternoon and could stay near peak speeds into the early evening. Environment Canada predicts sustained wind speeds on Lake Erie could reach 55 km/hr and wind gusts could reach up to 80 km/hr.
It is reported that waves could reach 2 to 3m in height early Saturday evening.
The LTVCA says last year, flooding occurred along Erie Shore Dr. in Chatham-Kent when the area experienced sustained winds above 35 km/hr from the south. The conservation authority says the forecasted wind speeds and direction are expected to cause flooding in this area.
There is also a risk that wave action could damage shoreline protection works and cause shoreline erosion in vulnerable areas.
People should take extra caution and avoid the shoreline. The waves can be strong and the shoreline is slippery. There could also be hazardous debris within the waves and water, which could be thrown onto the shoreline.
Children, pets and livestock should also be kept away from the water.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory if necessary. This message will be in effect until Sunday.
