Another Phone Scam Warning

Ontario Provincial Police are warning residents of new and existing scams making the rounds.

As part of fraud prevention month, the OPP are pushing an awareness campaign.

In a new type of scam, police say fraudsters are claiming to be 911 operators. Fraudsters will reportedly call saying your credit card is being used and advise you to immediately call police.

"As you hang up, the suspects stay on the line -- never truly disconnecting with you -- and they identify themselves as a 911 operator," the OPP say in a news release. "They will ask you for credit card information or other personal identification to complete the scam."

This is one of many phone scams circulating. Police say others involve a frantic phone call from a "loved one" asking for money.

"In 2017, the Emergency Scam claimed 125 victims in Ontario with losses of almost $500,000," the OPP says. "Police admit 95% of the crimes go unreported."

The OPP have released a video with tips on how to avoid being a fraud victim. The goal of the awareness campaign is to get residents to "recognize, reject, and report fraud".
