There won't be any after-school sports taking place outside in Chatham-Kent or Sarnia-Lambton Tuesday.
LKSSAA coordinator James Clarke says they have cancelled all outdoor athletics for the day -- including practices -- at both the LKDSB and SCCDSB because of the extreme heat.
"Particularly football... they're wearing a lot of equipment out there and they're dehydrated enough without the heat factor kicking in," says Clarke. "Soccer and cross-country are obviously also issues with kids running back and forth nonstop."
Clarke says officials will be re-evaluating the forecast Tuesday afternoon to determine if Wednesday's games and practices will be cancelled as well.
He says it's a rare occasion for the boards to cancel all of their outdoor sports because of the heat.
"We've had some warm days to say where schools individually have said, 'We're not going to practice today' -- those type of things," says Clarke. "But a long stand like this and during the season -- I don't think we've had this happen before."
For now, only two soccer games are being affected by the cancellations.
In the Jr. Girls' division, the game between Great Lakes and Sarnia St. Pat's is cancelled and so is the Jr. Boys' game between the Ursuline College Lancers and Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks. Those games are both being re-scheduled.
All indoor activities, including basketball and volleyball games, will go ahead as previously planned.
Wednesday's football games involving Sarnia St. Pat's, UCC, CKSS, and Sarnia Northern are still slated to go ahead, but Clarke says they could also be affected by heat-related cancellations.
"The football is a little bit tougher because they have a tighter window to work with," says Clarke. "We do have a bye week slotted in the middle of the season and we may just slide those games into that."
