A Cool Start To The School Year

A sweater may be in order for school kids heading to class Tuesday in southwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada is forecasting a cool, maybe slightly wet start this week to the school year.

Meteorologist Steve Knott with the weather agency says while the first day of school always gives an autumn feel, it may feel a little like fall as well.

"A little cooler than normal. We've got a cold front," says Knott. "For most of the week this week we're looking at temperatures in the low 20s, three degrees below normal for this time of year."

The back-to-school forecast for Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent and the London area is very similar, with a mixture of clouds and sunshine and a high temperature hovering around 20 C. Knott says there is also a chance at some rain, but it doesn't appear to be much of a factor.

With cool temperatures in the region for much of the week, Knott says it could be an indicator of how things could be as summer turns to autumn.

"Cooler than usual for most of August...for the beginning of September and even through mid-September," says Knott. "The warmth is all in the west and the jet stream refuses to change."
