CK Pools Not Closed During Eclipse

All seven of Chatham-Kent's outdoor pools will be open Monday afternoon during the partial solar eclipse.

That includes three in Chatham (Jaycee, Walter Hawkins, Orville Wright), one in Dresden, one in Ridgetown, one in Thamesville, and one in Tilbury.

Officials with the municipality say the pools will only close if the lifeguards on duty cannot see the black dot that is on the bottom of the pool, as per health and safety regulations. However, day camps are being relocated for the afternoon.

The move to keep local outdoor pools open this afternoon runs contrary to closures in nearby Windsor and Sarnia.

Those cities are citing potential eye problems from viewing the eclipse with the naked eye.

Anyone who wants to view the eclipse directly will need to wear special eclipse sunglasses or use a pinhole projector. Everyday sunglasses, cameras, and telescopes will not protect your eyes properly.

Staring directly at the eclipse for any length of time can cause permanent eye damage.
