Chatham Puppy Owner Convicted

A 20-year-old Chatham woman has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges after an incident involving a puppy in July of 2016.

The court ruled she failed to provide veterinary attention for a nine-week-old puppy that jumped from a moving car and broke its leg.

Brittany Billard has been banned from owning animals for three years, received a $650 fine and will have to pay $1,880 in restitution towards the care of the puppy.

An Ontario SPCA officer was tipped off about the nine-week-old puppy, thought to be a Shepherd/Great Pyrenees cross.

The puppy’s owner told the officer that it jumped out of a moving car five days earlier and she took it to a veterinarian, but did not follow the recommended treatment.

The woman later told OSPCA officials she could not afford treatment for the puppy and the dog was later seized by the Ontario SPCA.

It eventually had its leg amputated and has since been adopted into a new home.
