The month of May brings prom and graduation season, and with it, the inevitable high school parties.
The Ontario Provincial Police is warning parents about the potential pitfalls of hosting after-prom and graduation parties.
While the ultimate goal is for high school students to have a safe and legal way to blow off steam as the school year winds down, the OPP discourages parents from hosting or allowing their children to attend parties where alcohol may be served.
Police say parents can be held responsible for injury or illness that may occur on their property if they host a party where alcohol is served. They say property damage, assault, alcohol or drug abuse, sexual assault, and other offences are often reported at these parties.
The OPP encourages parents to talk to their high school children about the potential dangers and suggest they find other activities for celebration.
Police will be stepping up patrols and RIDE programs during prom and graduation season to ensure there is no underage drinking or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
