Catholic Board Approves Closures, New Builds

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board has approved a recommendation that involves closing six schools and building two new ones in Chatham.

The board of trustees voted on the matter Tuesday night during their regular board meeting.

The recommendation made by the Pupil Accommodation Review Committee (PARC) was specified as "Option A" -- the favoured option identified back in September 2016.

Option A involves building one school in north Chatham and another in south Chatham. The students from the six schools marked for closure would be divided accordingly.

Students in the french immersion program at Monsignor Uyen Catholic School would be moved to Our Lady of Fatima after renovations took place.

"We have a bold plan for the future, which will result in state-of-the-art learning environments and improved educational opportunities," said Dan Parr in a media release.

Although the board has approved the recommendation, the final decision rests with the Ministry of Education.

If the ministry approves it, then the school board is looking to have the relocation process completed by September 2019.
