Provincial Tomato Growers And Processors Reach Agreement For 2017 Crop

An agreement has been reached between Ontario's tomato growers and processors.

Elmer Buchanan, who was appointed Trustee of the Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers Board earlier this month, notes both sides were willing to compromise in order to reach an agreement.

He is thankful for all parties and their hard work to benefit the industry, and says he looks forward to moving ahead with further negotiations.

Provincial Minister of Agriculture Jeff Leal, who appointed Buchanan once negotiations had stalled, says he's please that the OPVG and Ontario's three biggest processors have reached an agreement for the 2017 growing season.

He adds the government is supportive of the regulated marketing system, as it ensures that high quality food is produced and jobs are retained, which is good for farmers, processors, and consumers.

The existing M.O.U. signed last year regarding pricing and contract tonnage will all be maintained between growers and Highbury Canco, ConAgra Foods Canada and Sun-Brite Foods.
