Horwath To Wynne: Table Hydro Legislation Monday

The leader of Ontario's New Democrats says it's time Premier Kathleen Wynne got serious about her plan to reduce hydro bills.

Andrea Horwath is calling on Wynne to table her promised hydro legislation on Monday.

“Premier Wynne has issued a news release and delivered talking points – now it’s time to deliver a plan,” said Horwath. “Ontario families, businesses and municipalities have a right to know what will happen to their bills and who will pay the price for $40-billion going to pay interest rather than investing in hospitals, schools, transit and roads.”

On March 2, Premier Wynne announced that her government would take action to reduce Ontarians' hydro bills by a further 17%, on top of the 8% saving that resulted from the lifting of the provincial portion of the HST on hydro.

Since then, according to Horwath, there have been few additional details.

“If Wynne is planning to sign Ontarians on to a $40-billion borrowing deal, she owes us all one heck of an explanation. That’s why I’m calling on her to table a bill Monday – so it can be properly debated by the legislature, by the public, and by experts," she said.

The NDP released its hydro plan in late-February. The party claims it can cut hydro bills by 30% by scraping time-of-use premiums, cap profits for private producers, have rural residents pay the same delivery charges as city-dwellers, and reverse the sell-off of Hydro One.
