UPDATE: Winter Storm Moving Into Region

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement calling for snow and blowing snow over much of Southern Ontario.

The statement is in effect for Chatham-Kent, Windsor-Essex and Leamington, and London-Middlesex.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Mark Schuster says the region could get up to 15 cm (5.9 inches) before the storm moves out of the region Tuesday.

"It does look like the heaviest snow is going to be through the afternoon and into the evening," says Schuster. "Maybe 5 cm [2 inches] of snow today, followed by another 2-4 [cm] tonight and a couple of additional centimetres on Tuesday."

The wind will exacerbate driving conditions. With gusts of up to 50 km/h (31 mph), blowing snow will reduce visibility.

A developing area of low pressure over Colorado will move across the Great Lakes Monday night and merge with an intense storm over the east coast.

Forecasters have named the storm Stella and predict it will dump up to 30 cm (12 inches) of snow on Hamilton and the Niagara Region while areas on the east coast will get even more snow.

Schuster says the forecast for the second half of March Break will be much more hospitable with temperatures rising above freezing again.
