An Early Bloom For 2017?

It's been a mild month and those warm temperatures could cause the blooming process to start early this year -- something some local fruit growers have come to expect.

Don Thompson of Thompson's Orchards says it seems like the blooming process starts a little earlier each year.

"People are starting to kind of expect [that] the bloom should be in April, but I mean normal bloom wouldn't be until the first part of May," says Thompson.

Should there be an early bloom this year, Thompson says there's a few farming techniques they can use if there's a sudden frost, but ultimately there's nothing that can be done.

"You're at the mercy of the weather," he says. "If it's going to bloom too early and it's going to get too cold there's absolutely nothing we can do."

Temperatures last week broke records, reaching a high of 15.4 C (59.7 F) on February 23.

Thompson says it would be ideal if the temperature stayed around the freezing mark for the next month or so.

"One of the worst things I think we can have in our industry is to get a real warm spell, push a lot of sap and buds swelling up and opening up, and then all of a sudden get a real cold snap come along," he says. "That's what does damage to the trees and flowers."

He sites the biggest loss to happen was in 2012, when the temperature made a drastic change.

However, Thompson says for right now they're okay.

"There's a very slight bit of bud movement where they're swelled up a little bit but nothing that would concern me at this point," says Thompson.
