Slush Slows First Ice Dragon Boat Race

The warm weather over the weekend didn't exactly provide favourable conditions for the first Ice Dragon Boat event to happen in North America.

However, the opportunity was not wasted.

Charlene King with the Chatham-Kent Raging Dragons says the team gave it their all, both on ice and in slush.

"It was so warm that our first race was really fun and we had a good time," says King. "But the second one... brutal, because it was all slushy [and] most boats had to be pushed."

The event was held at Ottawa's Rideau Canal over the weekend to celebrate Canada's 150th.

The CK Raging Dragons didn't place, but King says it was still a great experience.

"It wasn't what we were expecting but we had a great time and we can only hope that next year the weather is more [cooperative]," she says. "We've actually learned that it takes a lot of work to push these boats."

Following the competition the team made the best of their time in Ottawa, visiting different tourist attractions.

Returning back home, the team will have to wait for their summer league which will start up sometime in April.
