Adults may be having more trouble keeping safety on their own minds -- even though it's a lecture they often preach to children.
That's the message from Constable Tamara Dick of the Crime Prevention and Public Safety Division.
She held a presentation for women at the Retro Suites hotel in Chatham, Tuesday night.
One point of discussion had revolved on knowing what to do if ever faced with an intruder in the home.
"They need to know what they can use to help them in a situation," says Dick. "Be alert. Always scan [and] look around, know what's around you."
Although the session was exclusive to women, Dick says men are just as vulnerable, adding it's not always men who are "the bad guy."
Dick says there are always things people can do to stay safe or to avoid conflict.
"I want everyone to know their surrounding, so plan your walk if you're walking, make sure you're on a sidewalk, make sure there's lights, make sure that you're facing traffic," she says. "If you get uncomfortable and you see ahead someone approaching you that you're maybe a little worried about, [then] cross the street."
There are several things people can do to protect themselves but the common denominator is to be aware.
