Spitfires Can't Weather the Storm 4-2

Garrett McFadden scored a goal and an assist as the Guelph Storm downed the Windsor Spitfires 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the WFCU Centre.

The Spits stand pat at second place in the OHL West Division standings with 65 points, two behind the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, who lost Saturday to the Sarnia Sting.

The game began with just one penalty called through the first two periods.  The Storm's Givani Smith was called at 1:42 in the opening period.  Guelph got on the board toward the end of the period with the first goal of the season for Nolan Makkonen.  James McEwan doubled the Storm lead to 2-0 at 16:02 in the second period, his ninth score of the season.  Just 23 seconds later, the Spitfires cracked the scoreboard on a goal from Connor Corcoran.  Tyler Angle and Cole Purboo assisted on that goal for Windsor.  The score remained 2-1 Guelph until the third period, when Aaron Luchuk tied it up for Windsor at 7:51.

Isaac Ratliffe broke the tie at 16:48 for Guelph, with his 22nd goal of the year.  It would end up being the game winner.  McFadden put an empty-net insurance goal into the net to seal the win for the Storm.

Mario Culina had 22 saves in a losing effort for Windsor.  The Spitfires had 39 shots on goal, 37 of which were stopped by Guelph goalstop Liam Herbst.

Windsor travels to Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night for a key divisional matchup with the Hounds.
