Evaluating The Kiwanis Theatre

Changes could be on the way for the Kiwanis Theatre in Chatham.

Municipal staff are hoping to have a better understanding of what options are available by the spring of 2017.

Staff were recently given the go-ahead to compile a report, which will specify and recommend options for the theatre moving forward.

General Manager of Community Development Bob Crawford says they're not going to rush anything.

"We're going to take a long slow look at this," says Crawford. "We'll engage with both the folks that use the theatre, the performers, and the other theatres in the community to see what might work best."

One of the possibilities that will be considered is transforming the theatre into a multi-purpose facility.

"Obviously we're going to take a look at all of the potential options," says Crawford, adding their goal is to attract more people to downtown Chatham.

Crawford says anyone with concerns or ideas can contact him.

"At the end of the day I know we can't please everybody," he says. "Bearing in mind that we need to be a sustainable organization sometimes we have to make some decisions that can be quite difficult."

Crawford says because this is a work-in-progress, there's no estimate on when the report will go to council.
