Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has broken her silence.
She addressed supporters in New York just after 11am Wednesday, saying her loss is painful and will be for a long time.
"Last night, I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country," says Clinton. "I'm sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country."
Despite losing to Trump, Clinton says nothing has made her prouder than being a champion for women.
"I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling. But someday, someone will," says Clinton. "To all the little girls, never doubt that you are deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world."
In a stunning victory, Republican candidate Donald Trump won battleground states like Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania en route to defeating Clinton.
But Clinton says the effort was never about her, and is urging her supporters to accept the results.
"Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead," she says. "Our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power. We don't just respect that. We cherish it."
President Barack Obama has invited President-elect Donald Trump to join him at the White House on Thursday to discuss the presidential transition.
