Enrollment Continues To Slide At Public School Board

Statistics from the Lambton Kent District School Board show a significant student enrollment decline over the past decade.

Chair Jane Bryce says says they've seen a 16% drop in the last ten years.

"Our elementary enrollment was over 16,000 in 2006 and it's declined to just over 14,000, a decline of 1,951 students," she says. "This is a result of a dwindling birth rate and birth rate projections in the catchment area show these declining enrollments will continue."

With smaller elementary graduates, secondary school enrollment is down by 2,172 over the last decade. High schools are at 68% capacity while elementary schools are at 75% capacity.

With reduced enrollment, the LKDSB is at 75% capacity and 68% capacity for secondary schools.

The annual pupil accommodation report will be discussed during a special meeting at 6pm this evening.

Options under consideration include closing London Road, Lakeroad, Queen Elizabeth II and Confederation Central elementary schools and sending students to other schools or a newly built one on board-owned land in Sherwood Village.

Consolidating the French Immersion program at Errol Rd. Public School is another consideration.
