Electoral Reform, Constituents Top Issues For MP

Chatham-Kent-Leamington MP Dave Van Kesteren will have his home riding on his mind as a new session of Parliament begins.

Speaking with BlackburnNews.com, the Conservative MP has no plans for specific bills for the House of Commons. He wants this term to be about helping constituents in Chatham-Kent-Leamington.

"We've talked to a number of post-secondary schools," says Van Kesteren. "We've really focussed our attention on helping organizations like the municipalities, and any other industries that are looking for some assistance."

Van Kesteren will also be following electoral reform conversations closely.

The federal government is considering moving from a candidate-based election system to a kind of "party-list proportional" system. This would see Canada's political parties draw up a list of representatives they want in office. Canadians would then vote for a party, not a candidate or individual.

House of Commons seats would then fill up based on the proportion of votes each party gets.

"Often times, there's nothing even close to a majority, so they build support from other parties," adds Van Kesteren. "In cases like Italy, we've seen it in Israel too, an organization has two or three members and can actually sway their government."

Parliament resumes September 19.
