Chatham-Kent firefighters responded to the blaze at 12534 Grove Mills Line around 3:15am Thursday.
Officials say a barn on the property was "fully involved." Crews focused on protecting the nearby home from catching fire.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Damages are estimated at $100,000.
Alan Smith will begin his new role with the municipality on July 20.
