A major heat wave, is only adding to what's already been a hot and dry summer in southwestern Ontario.
Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips says this week's weather is going to be different from the hot bouts experienced so far this summer.
"We're going to see at least five days in a row, likely above 30 C (86 F)," he explains. "We also see temperatures at night not cooling off -- they'll be 23 C (73 F) or 24 C (75 F). We'll also see higher humidex."
The humidex is expected to make it feel like 45 C (113 F) at times.
Southwestern Ontario's already seen 30 days above 30 C (86 F) this season.
Last year at this time, we'd only experienced 13 of those days.
As far as rain levels, Phillips says the region has seen about 190 mm (7.5 in) since May. That number is typically around 270 mm (10.6 in) at this time of year.
"In a normal year, we're still only 70% of our normal precipitation," he adds. "But in a hot year, we need more rain than we would normally get."
Although we could use more rain, Phillips says crops are not in terrible shape, and farmers in other regions of Ontario are worse off right now.
A special air quality statement is also in effect for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. The high temperatures have the potential to increase ground-level ozone concentration.
