Work on the Parry Bridge on Keil Dr. is right on schedule, with the structure expected to be partially reopened at the start of September.
Municipal officials say steel reinforcing work has been mostly completed. Crews still need to sand blast the steel for painting, as well as remove asphalt from the bridge.
"The sidewalks will be reinstalled," adds Director of Transporation Adam Sullo. "The west side will be installed by September 2, then the east side by the end of September. They're still slating to have two lanes open by September 2 [as well]."
The bridge has been closed to vehicle traffic since June 1.
The work hasn't come without its hiccups. Sullo says this has mostly had to do with ordering specialized materials. But crews have been able to mitigate the delays and keep work on track.
"That's what we're seeing more and more with some of our construction projects," says Sullo. "The materials we need to order are not always stock items, some of them are more specialized. Those are what generally cause most of the delays that we have."
While the bridge won't be fully reopened until October, Sullo expects traffic in other parts of the city will start to return to normal.
"With the two lanes being open the left turn will still be restricted southbound. So traffic should move pretty efficiently. But definitely having it open will be a huge relief for us and a huge relief for those who travel in the area," Sullo says.
