A Chatham-Kent police officer with a passion for the service is being recognized for his years of devotion to the force.
Constable Peter Bakker recently received The John Walker Award.
He was presented with the award during the Police Association of Ontario's General Meeting.
"I'm very honoured to be the recipient of The John Walker Award, especially knowing the past executive members who have received this honour," says Bakker.
He only recently stepped down from the position of President of the Chatham-Kent Police Association in 2014, after spending 14 years in that role.
"Over the years the job has always been made easier because of our relationship, not only with all the chair persons of the police services board but the previous police chiefs as well," says Bakker.
He says the decision to step down as president was more of a succession plan - to have someone in place so that questions could be answered and experiences could be drawn on.
Although he no longer carries the title of president he continues to work for Chatham-Kent police.
"I've got 32 years in so somewhere down the road I'll be looking at retirement," says Bakker.
The John Walker award is given to someone who posses leadership qualities while also displaying devotion and sacrifice.
