Two graduating Dresden students are on the receiving end of a scholarship from the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority.
Emily Glasgow and Jared Vanrabaeys from Lambton Kent Composite School are each getting $1,000 for pursing environmental studies at the University of Guelph, come September.
Glasgow will be studying Plant Science, while Vanrabaeys is enrolled in Geography.
Rick Battson from the Conservation Authority says they were both a shoo-in.
"They really had excellent applications," says Battson. "They were good students and were involved in environmental activities outside of school, so that's really what put them over the edge."
He says they view the scholarship as a reward to students who pursue a higher education with conservation in mind, as opposed to an incentive initiative.
"It's really trying to recognize students and trying to help them in their studies moving forward," says Battson.
Although they only get an average of around ten applications every year, Battson says the environmental sciences are still a big draw for high schoolers across the region.
"They seem to be very popular. Most of the people who work here have come out of one of those programs as well," says Battson. "so it's a good introduction to the students who are going into that program to be able to make connections with the conservation authority."
