Woman Spat On, Punched In Supermarket Assault

London police are searching for a suspect after a woman was punched and spat on at a southwest London grocery store.

Police say the victim was shopping with her four-month-old son at the Superking Supermarket on Wonderland Rd. S around 5pm Monday when another woman began yelling, punching and spitting on her. The woman then grabbed the victim's hijab in what police say was "an attempt to pull it off of her head" before pulling her hair.

The woman then took off.

The victim suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Police say the attack was unprovoked.

"Right now we don't know the motive for the attack," says Constable Sandasha Bough. "We need to locate this suspect, we need to speak to her, find out what the reason was behind the assault and then we will go from there."

Constable Bough says the Street Gang Unit will review the case once the investigation is complete to determine whether the attack was a hate crime.

Police are now looking for a woman described as 30-40-years-old, approximately 5'5'', 150 lbs, with a medium build and long black hair pulled back in a ponytail. She was wearing a red Canada T-shirt, black pants, and was carrying a green purse. The woman spoke with a heavy accent.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
