Murder Suspect Awaits Psych Assessment

A Blenheim man charged with first degree murder has been remanded in custody following another court appearance.

Walter Ardis, 78, seemed generally unresponsive and confused when he appeared in a Chatham Courtroom via video feed Tuesday. When a judge asked to verify his name, Ardis paused, then replied with "good morning." His lawyer Dave Jacklin eventually confirmed his client`s identity.

After a brief chat with Ardis over the phone, Jacklin told the judge he's working on getting a psychiatric assessment for his client. It could come as early as next week.

Ardis was arrested back in March after his wife's body was found in their torched home in Blenheim. Margaret Ardis was 73 when she died.

He`ll make another video appearance in court the morning of June 29.
