A London-based bunny rescue group wants to relocate the Ridgetown rabbits.
Hoppy Hearts is an organization that rescues and houses stray rabbits, with the hope of getting them into new homes. They're looking to travel to the town and capture the rabbits, with their population growing for nearly two years.
"With the case in Ridgetown, because rabbits have such a short gestation period, these rabbits are breeding very rapidly," says group spokesperson Kaylie MacIntosh. "It's not that they're thriving outside, it's that their breeding then dying."
MacIntosh says they've attempted to contact Chatham-Kent councillors about the issue. While they're struggling with capacity issues, they are appealing to other rescue groups to take them in.
"Right now our rescue is at capacity. We don't have enough foster homes in London to support more rabbits coming in," says MacIntosh. "Nor do we have a high enough volume of steady donations to be able to afford the care of another rabbit."
While adoption fees come in at around $80, the cost to house and spay/neuter the rabbits is around $200.
The group is looking to start rescuing the rabbits in the next few weeks.
