Kent Bridge Catcher Eligible For MLB Draft

Luke Van Rycheghem is only a phone call away from joining a Major League Baseball team.

The 18-year-old catcher from Kent Bridge is eligible for the 2016 first-year player draft.

"It's exciting," says Van Rycheghem. "It makes you realize that all your hard work pays off and that you're actually good enough to play at that level."

Van Rycheghem wasn't selected in the first two rounds Thursday night, but he's still hoping to be selected somewhere between the 10th and the 15th round. Rounds 3-10 will take place on Friday while the remainder of the draft through round 40 is scheduled for Saturday.

"I'm talking to about six or seven teams right now," says Van Rycheghem. "It's been all good -- they have all my information, now I just have to wait."

Van Rycheghem has committed to playing college baseball at Stetson University in Florida in the fall, but says his attendance there will ultimately depend on where he gets drafted and how much his signing bonus will be.
