Around 50 sexual abuse victims will join the Chatham-Kent Film Group for a screening of the film "Spotlight" at Chatham's Capitol Theatre Monday.
This year's academy award winner for best picture documents a Boston Globe investigation into sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Organizers have been trying to secure a copy of the film for months.
"Understanding how society's institutions react to these allegations better informs us how to do it right the next time around," says Lawyer and Chatham native Rob Talach. "Really the central goal here is to prevent childhood sexual abuse."
Talach is a lawyer with Beckett Personal Injury Lawyers in London. He says the screening will be a rally-point for those who suffered through the scandal many years ago.
"Of course, Chatham is mentioned at the conclusion of the film in the credits, as one of the Canadian epicentres of this problem with the Father Sylvestre crisis a number of years ago," says Talach.
The film goes Monday at 7pm at the Capitol Theatre. Organizers are also giving away 50 copies of the movie.
