Chatham-Kent's police chief says education is key to preventing more accidents involving off-road vehicles.
"I'm of the opinion that a lot of these ATV collisions were preventable collisions," says Gary Conn. "They need to serve as a reminder to all of our citizens that these are not toys."
Conn says police are working with members of the Chatham-Kent ATV Club who are actively promoting ATV safety.
"We as police are certainly going to increase our efforts to educate the community via our website, social media, and any other venue we can think of," says Conn.
Since Chatham-Kent's new ATV by-law came into effect last March, Conn says there have been four serious collisions involving off-road vehicles, one of which involved a fatality.
Police continue to track ATV offences and collisions and will be providing an overall report to Chatham-Kent council once the one-year by-law wraps up on March 7, 2017.
