Pines Students Strike Gold At Music Festival

Students at UCC in Chatham are celebrating what turned out to be a golden affair at the Atlantic Festivals of Music in Halifax.

The school entered four different competitions taking home two gold medals (jazz band and a guitar ensemble) and two silvers (choir and concert band).

Music teacher Michael Milner who serves as the director for the school's concert band says it was an especially strong showing for them.

"Historically we pretty much manage to get an odd gold," says Milner. "Quite a few silvers and on occasion a bronze."

Grade 12 student Tate Pumfrey, who participated in three of the groups (choir, concert band, and jazz band), was thrilled when he found out they did so well.

"I had a trombone solo in Jazz band," says Pumfrey. "So when I found out we won gold I was really happy because I thought I butchered the solo."

Taking home at least one gold was especially sweet for fifth year student Ian Reuten, who knew this was his last shot at taking home the top prize in the competition.

"When I found out that we got gold in jazz I was like, 'Yes!'" says Reuten. "Finally in my last year of high school we got gold in jazz band. That was an awesome moment."

The music festival was held from April 27-29.
