Leamington Fire Services reported the crash just after 5pm on Thursday.
Fire officials initially said no one was injured in the crash, however they have since reported that the pilot has been taken to hospital with a minor head injury. The pilot was the only person on board when the aircraft crashed.
The Ontario Provincial Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
Alan Smith will begin his new role with the municipality on July 20.
