A convicted murderer who killed three people in Chatham in 1991 will get another chance at day parole.
Jason Cofell's original application was denied in August 2015, but he filed an appeal of that decision based on the grounds that the parole board did not give proper weight to the positive elements in his file.
The Parole Board of Canada's Appeal Division says it has since reviewed Cofell's file and has concluded that he deserves a new hearing.
The Appeal Division's decision states that the Parole Board "did not provide an adequate risk assessment because it did not meet its obligation to assess and weigh the positive and negative factors" in the case before arriving at its decision.
As a result, the Appeal Division has ordered a new hearing with two different board members conducting the risk assessment.
In the meantime, the decision that was reached last August will remain in effect.
Cofell was convicted in the brutal murders of Jason Pangburn and Pangburn's grandparents, Albert and Victoria Critchley.
