The jobless rate in Windsor has dropped, and the city no longer holds the title for the highest unemployment in Canada.
The rate fell in February to 7.7% from 9.3% in January.
Montreal now holds the title of having the highest jobless rate. It increased to 8.7%. Windsor didn't even place in the top five.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says the figures show city council is on the right track with holding the line on taxes, but he also credits new employment at the Windsor Assembly Plant.
"Seeing our largest employer, FCA [Fiat Chrysler Automobiles] spend $2.8-billion in our community to upgrade their plant and to hire 1,200 people is just great news," he says. "We see the signs of those positive investments coming forward and showing themselves in the unemployment rate."
The number of people working in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area increased by 2,000.
Statistics Canada says London's jobless rate increased to 6.4% from 5.8% the month before.
The provincial rate was 6.8%, up slightly from January, while Canada's unemployment rate crept upwards to 7.3% last month from 7.2% in January. It was the first time the national rate increased in three years. The country lost 2,300 jobs overall.
