Cupcakes Help Support OSPCA

Cupcake lovers in Chatham-Kent have been given a chance help to a good cause while enjoying their favorite baked goods.

Value Village in Chatham held a cupcake bake-off on Saturday to help support the Ontario SPCA, as part of their annual National Cupcake Day campaign.

Value Village staff, employees from the Kent County Animal Centre, and Chatham #17 Girl Guides donated more than 500 cupcakes to the fundraiser.

Robyn Brady, community relations coordinator for the Kent County Animal Centre, says this is the fourth or fifth year Value Village has held the bake-off.

"It's grown every year. The first year they raised $80 and last year they raised [almost] $900," she says.

Around $926 was raised on Saturday from cupcakes sales, with more donations still expected. The baked treats were also put to the test by a panel of judges, which included BlackburnNews.com reporter Mike James.

"We are very impressed with the turn out this year," says Brady. "They go above and beyond. The creativity that's come out of [the girl guides], and the staff from Value Village, and the shelter as well, has been just amazing. "

Proceeds raised from the sale of the cupcakes will go to the OSPCA to help with day-to-days operational costs and also to help fight cruelty against animals.
