UCC Grads Enter Songwriting Competition

Joey Labute and Jacqui Verellen may be graduates of Ursuline College Chatham, but their new song is all about "The Six."

The two have entered the CBC songwriting-contest "Song In The 6ix," a search to find a new anthem for the City of Toronto. Labute says he and his fellow Chatham-Kent native have worked on projects in the past, and are excited about their new tune, simply titled "The Anthem."

"I didn't really know if I was going to enter or not," explains Labute. "Jacqui and I have been friends for a really long time. She heard the song and she really liked it, and I heard her play and I knew we had to get her to sing it."

Labute is currently studying music at the University of Toronto, while Verellen is going to school at Western University. Writing the lyrics and music, Labute wanted to show the diversity of the city, but also the common ground Toronto's residents share.

"Everyone comes from their house, they all get on the subway to their respective jobs, and they all have different lifestyles," he says. "I thought it would be really interesting to show we all come from these different paths, but we all live in the same city."

Members of the public can vote on their favorite songs until February 26. After the top six finalists are announced on March 1, a panel of judges will choose the overall winner.
