Stolen Cheques Lead To Fraud

A 73-year-old Chatham man who police allege was interested in more than friendship faces fraud and forgery charges.

Police allege the man befriended an elderly woman but then sometime last fall removed a cheque book from her house.

They say between last October and this month, 18 of her cheques were deposited to his account.

A total of about $3,000 was involved and the man faces 18 counts of fraud under $5,000 and 18 counts of possession of a forged document.

Police say a family member discovered the discrepancies in the woman's bank statements.
