CK Could Discontinue Communities In Bloom

The municipality of Chatham-Kent continues to receive backlash from proposed service cuts as councillors juggle what facilities to keep open or close down.

In an effort to save $76,891, staff have suggested removing three Communities In Bloom positions from the payroll. These would be the coordinator, conference and marketing positions.

Communities In Bloom is a national competition that judges Canadian municipalities on their beautifying efforts within their communities.

Communities In Bloom volunteer Edwinna Rawlings feels they've made a positive impact on the community since the initiative was taken on in 2002.

"If we don't have the direction of a coordinator, I'm afraid we're going to lose volunteers," she says. "It's just going to fade away."

Fellow volunteer Chris Crawford adds the initiative unites the fringe communities of CK.

"It makes us a part of Chatham-Kent," says Crawford . "Even though we may be on the outskirts, we're not 'missed' when we're in that group."

Community members also showed up during Wednesday's budget deliberations to support the Ridgetown Youth Centre and Bothwell Scout Hut, all of which are up to be closed. There have yet to be any motions made to keep those services from being cut.
