The owner and manager of a local travel agency suggests Canadians shouldn't let a lower dollar discourage their travel plans. In fact, the timing may not be better.
"Obviously, if you're going to go to Disney it's going to be a little more expensive for you," says Al Valente at Valente Travel in Windsor. "But having said that, there's a lot of tour operators that are offering incentives for Canadian residents in particular."
He says packages to the Caribbean aren't as affected by fluctuations in the dollar because those prices are set at the beginning of the year. Some destinations and cruises are offering discounts of up to 20%.
Over the past week, Valente says business has jumped 10% to 15% over this time last year, and he expects it to get even busier once the snow flies.
He says a lower Canadian dollar has convinced many local travellers to fly out of domestic airports instead of airports in Detroit. Valente also suggests the timing couldn't be better for Windsor's airport to start offering more direct flights down south.
"We're noticing quite a significant increase in the number of travellers leaving out of Canada, specifically Windsor now," he says.
