CK Waiting On Progressive Deal

Chatham-Kent officials aren't sure how a deal to buy Progressive Waste Solutions will impact municipal garbage collection.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Progressive would be bought by Texas company Waste Connections to form a new business.

Councillor Frank Vercouteren sits on the Ridge Landfill Committee, which is owned by Progressive Waste. He says the municipality has not been contacted by the company with this news.

"I haven't heard anything about that, nothing at all. It doesn't mean it isn't happening of course," he says. "I deal with Progressive Waste with different containers, and I haven't had a notice yet, so I would assume it's in the making."

When BlackburnNews.com told CAO Don Shropshire the news, he said that was "the first [he'd] heard of it."

The "reverse takeover" would see the new waste management corporation being 70% owned by the Texas-based company.
