UPDATE: Multiple Crashes Block Hwy. 401

Police are urging drivers to use extreme caution as weather and road conditions have caused a number of collisions on Hwy. 401 in the Chatham-Kent area.

The Ontario Provincial Police says officers responded to a jack-knifed tractor trailer on the highway, east of Queens Line around noon on Sunday. The crash partially blocked eastbound traffic, but motorists were still able to get by.

Another crash, which occurred around 1:30pm, saw the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 blocked near Mull Rd. That collision has since been cleared off the highway.

OPP officers are also responding to several vehicles in the ditch along the 401.

Police are asking the public to avoid travel if possible. Otherwise, drivers should be sure to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and adjust speed to match the road conditions.
