E-Cigarette Enforcement Tweaked

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit has hired a by-law officer to enforce new provincial vaping rules, but the contract position won't be as extensive as first planned.

A ban on vaping in public spaces was scheduled to take affect January 1, but the province pulled the plug on the ban in mid-December so it could review all regulations at once, to include using pot in e-cigarettes.

With the ban now delayed for at least six months, the health unit will have to find other ways to keep the new by-law enforcement officer busy, says Manager of Environmental Programs Rosemarie Arndt.

She says the new hire will now likely only work one or two-days a week, educating e-cigarette users and enforcing a ban on selling e-cigarettes to minors as of January 1.

E-cigarettes simulate the experience of smoking tobacco by vaporizing a liquid that usually contains nicotine.
