Social Assistance Levels Decline

It is a very small drop, but the Chatham-Kent social services department is reporting a decrease in the number of cases over the past year.

The department director Valarie Colasanti says there are about 3,000 cases which is a drop from the previous year and the second year in a row for lower numbers.

"That decline has continued, although it is only a slight decline, but that's still good news it means we're not increasing, that means some people are exiting the system and fewer people are coming onto the system," she says. "We're seeing the whole gamut from people making minimum wage to people making $20 an hour, we really are seeing right across the board people are exiting to jobs of different wages."

She says there have been some service jobs like call centre jobs open up but also health care jobs including PSW positions.
